Our Story

After spending hundreds of hours navigating the needs of her son and the services and cost of non-traditional education, Dr. Kristen Hodges thought there must be an easier way. Here's her story:  

I’m a psychologist. And I have a child with special needs. I'll never forget the day I sat sobbing in my car because I didn't know how to help my then 4-year-old. I didn't know what was wrong, but I knew something wasn't right. The next day, I took a deep breath and called every child psychologist I could find. One changed the entire trajectory of our story. She told me that what I was seeing as defiance was likely sensory issues.  I began navigating the world from my son's perspective. 

I learned more about Autism, my son's diagnosis, than any book would ever teach me. I also learned more about the educational system and how to navigate his needs outside the traditional route. I felt like a full-time case manager; I spent hundreds of hours researching services and then trying to figure out how to access funding. The time paid off. At the time of this writing, my now 7-year-old son receives therapy 5 days a week fully paid by insurance and attends private school fully funded through the Step Up for Students scholarship. 

I know the difference that child psychologist made simply by answering my call. I want to pay this forward by answering the next call - to help parents and guardians. I believe each child is a gift from God (Psalms 127: 3-5) with a good purpose and plan for the future (Jeremiah 29:11).
